Indonesian men’s team sepak takraw on Saturday presented the host nation’s 31st gold medal for the 2018 Asian Games. Indonesia beat Japan in the men’s quadrant category with 2-1 (15-21, 21-14 and 21-16).

The Japanese team of Seiya Takano, Masanori Hayashi, Yuki Sato and Takeshi Terashima won the first set, but after Muhammad Hardiansyah Muliang, Saiful Rijal, Rizky Abdul Rahan Pago and Nofrizal from Indonesia improved their coordination, they got the second and third sets.

Sepak takraw contributed one gold, one silver and three bronze to the Indonesian medal count.

“I saw Japan use a strategy of two killers on the wings and two feeders to take the lead in the first set, but I changed my strategy [in response], and here we are the winners, ”said Indonesian coach Asry Syam.

Singapore and Vietnam shared bronze in the men’s quadrant category.

In another match, Thailand beat Vietnam 2-0 (21-8, 21-10) in the women’s quadrant final, while the Indonesian quadrant women’s team shared the bronze medal with Laos.

When asked what the future holds for sepak takraw in Indonesia, coach Asry said the government has started taking [the sport] seriously and had thus provided a solid environment for the development of the sport.

“What is also important is that the government starts to think about the future of the sepak takraw athletes, their work and their future careers,” he said.
