Azerbaijan memo celebrates 2020 conflict over disputed lands


The Central Bank of Azerbaijan introduced a commemorative 500 manat note (valued at $ 294 at the official exchange rate) on November 4.

The question was on the anniversary of the victory of the Azerbaijani army, with the support of Turkey, in what the Azerbaijani government calls the 44-day patriotic war of 2020, but the Nagorno-Karabakh war. of 2020 by most of the rest of the world.

The new banknote is part of a political propaganda assault touting the conflict with Armenia over territory that was annexed to Azerbaijan during the Soviet era, but part of which, Artsakh, has a significant Armenian majority. The short war ended with a ceasefire whereby the opposing parties retained the areas they held at the time, and with the return of Armenia to Azerbaijan around the territories it had since occupied. 1994.

The victory is hailed as a tribute to the supreme commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Ilham Aliyev, who has also served as president since his father’s death in 2003. His election is widely viewed as a fraud.

The Central Bank mentioned that 12 of its employees took part in the war and were awarded with medals and honorary degrees.

The main design elements are the words of the president “Karabakh is Azerbaijan!” One side is dominated by an image of the mausoleum of Mullah Panah Vagif, called an example of the country’s historical and cultural heritage. Vagif was an 18th-century Azerbaijani poet, statesman and diplomat, and foreign minister of the Karabakh Khanate before it was taken over by Russia in 1806. The region’s Askeran Fortress, built in 1751, is visible on the left.

The other side shows the Khudafar Bridge, an example of ancient architecture that connects the country with Iran, the words translating to “November 8, Victory Day”, red tulips representing the blood of martyrs and veterans , and Azerbaijani soldiers holding the national flag.

Commemorative coins in gold and silver are also issued.
