Child tax credit expansion expires, pushing millions of children into poverty

The pandemic has forced upon scholars of American economics an uncomfortable truth. Despite all the talk of bootstraps and deficits and hammocks and debts, if you give the poor more money, their lives will generally improve because they will become less poor. This, of course, is a corollary of the first economic law of shebeen: Fck the deficit. People don’t have jobs. People don’t have money. And if you take that money away, those people become poorer again. From CBS News:

The child poverty rate in the United States has risen since the end of monthly government checks for the Expanded Child Tax Credit in December, according to a recent study by researchers at Columbia University. According to their analysis, an additional 3.7 million children fell into poverty in January. That pushed the national child poverty rate to 17% last month, from 12.1% in December — the highest poverty rate for children in the United States since the end of 2020, the researchers noted. A total of 12.6 million children lived below the poverty line last month, up from 8.9 million in December, according to the study.

An extension of the CTC was part of the Build Back Better Act, which resides in the Manchin-induced carbon freeze in the Senate. Child poverty experts did all but hang pink neon lights in the Senate galleries to let senators know this would happen if the CTC was allowed to expire. And that the following would happen as a result.

“It’s been a struggle – we have less food on the table,” said Meighen Lovelace, a mother in her 40s who lives in Avon, Colorado, with her two daughters, ages 10 and 14. “I also couldn’t get all of my daughter’s medications. Some of them aren’t covered by insurance, so we couldn’t buy them.” She added, “And we turn our heating down pretty low and sleep in our sweaters to reduce the heating bill.” Lovelace said the disability of one of her daughters means she spends much of her time providing care, which limits her ability to work. CTC checks allowed them to pay for essentials like gasoline, medicine and rent, but the family’s financial situation has been precarious since the checks ended, she said.

“It’s not just the financial part — it’s the feeling of security and ease” of knowing when the monthly checks would arrive, Lovelace said. “When we can’t budget for that, there’s a feeling of increased stress knowing we have to find a way to pay for our basic needs.”

Joe Manchin helped do this damage to Meighen Lovelace because a) Joe Manchin is a big jerk, and b) Joe Manchin pretended to be afraid that Meighen Lovelace would use his money to buy drugs, and that’s not a hyperbola. Or deer hunting. From ABC News:

Sen. Joe Manchin, DW.Va., privately asked if parents would misuse Child Tax Credit payments to purchase drugs, according to three sources familiar with his comments. Sources told ABC News that Manchin has privately detailed his concerns to colleagues and others on Capitol Hill over the past few months… In private conversations, Manchin also said he believes family leave paid would be exploited by Americans to go hunting during deer season, especially in his home state. of West Virginia, according to two separate sources familiar with the comments. Both remarks were first reported by the Huffington Post.

So because Joe Manchin and all the fucking Republicans in the Senate have soaked up all the clichés about poverty and the poor of the last 40 years, millions of children are back in poverty. Somehow, Manchin’s millions haven’t dulled his work ethic, at least when it comes to hitting the poor.

Weekly visit to the Pathe Archives: Here, from 1935, is the Song of the Reapers in Ukraine. It’s two years after the end of the Russian-induced famine that killed millions, so all that early chatter about cornfields and vast pastures is…ah…riddled with non-facts. History is so cool, but gaslighting, even old gaslighting, is not.

I make a point of going to CPAC every year. It was hard enough to handle before the Trump variant shone a light on the prion disease that afflicts conservatism in general and the GOP in particular. Now, however, with the likes of Nikki Haley and Mike Pence saying personae non gratae, we are left with the seeds and stalks of Trumpist hardcore. I listened long enough to hear Governor Kristi Noem lying about the Durham “inquiry”. It was enough. I don’t need to see US Senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio publicly degrade again. I remember when Sydney Pollack came back in Tootsie, when Dustin Hoffman brings him a piece about people who have gone back to Love Canal.

Nobody wants to pay $20 to see people living next to chemical waste. They can see it in New Jersey.

Is it a good day for dinosaur news, BBC? It’s always a good day for dinosaur news!

If even they left us, it could have been in the spring.

Ms. Pendant has just published her analysis of paddlefish and sturgeon fossils at a site called Tanis in North Dakota, USA. These investigations strongly suggest that the fish died in the spring. If you haven’t heard of Tanis yet, you will – a lot – over the next few years. It is the place that records in extraordinary detail not only the day, 66 million years ago, when a 12 km wide asteroid crashed into the planet, but also the minutes and hours that followed the catastrophic impact.

The giant space rock actually struck Earth in what is now the Gulf of Mexico, about 3,000 km from Tanis, but such was the energy transmitted during the event, its devastation was felt from afar. The North Dakota fossil site houses the remains of fish tossed to earth and buried in sediment by waves of water caused by unimaginable earthquakes. Fish have particles stuck in their gills. These are the spherules of molten rock expelled from the impact to then rain down on the planet.

Fish blowing into North Dakota from the Caribbean? It was a bad day. They could have died more easily considering how happy they make us now.

I’ll be back on Monday with the latest news from the ground war in Europe. Be well and play well, you bastards. Stay above the snake line, wear the fucking mask and take the fucking hits, especially the fucking boosters. And spare a thought for the Ukrainian people, who just want to govern themselves.
