Agora Intermodal comprises terminal and intermodal road and rail transport operators from Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy and the Netherlands, and accounts for around a third of the handling volume of ‘Central Europe. The consortium is named after the ancient Greek market, representing the exchange of ideas and technologies of its members.

In June 2021, Nexxiot presented its proprietary Kingpin Monitor in collaboration with VTG, the largest private railcar company in Europe. The Kingpin maintenance-free sensor set is designed to improve safety in intermodal transportation operations. When semi-trailers are loaded onto rail cars, the display’s LED lights provide employees with a clear visual indication of loading status. Representatives of AGORA Intermodal Terminals were able to discover the Nexxiot innovation in detail during a loading test under working conditions at the DUSS terminal in Hamburg-Billwerder. The participants were particularly impressed by the excellent implementation of the display and the ease of use of the Kingpin Monitor system.

Antje Falk, founding member of AGORA and managing director of Baltic Rail Gate GmbH, said: “We were impressed with the excellent readability of the Nexxiot display. Due to the unique angle at which the screen is mounted on both sides of the wagon, the LED on the screen can be seen even in direct sunlight and at a great distance. This feature is particularly important for crane operators who have to move semi-trailers. We would like this screen to become a European standard in the future and be able to be activated remotely. “

Kristian Kölsche, also Managing Director of Baltic Rail Gate GmbH, added: “Safety is the number one priority at terminals. It must also be guaranteed if more goods are transported by rail in the future. Therefore, we welcome any technological innovation, such as the Nexxiot Kingpin Monitor, which brings more security to operations. “

Stefan Kalmund, CEO of Nexxiot, said: “For us, external validation from industry and independent organizations is very important in the development of new solutions. Our sensors are the first of their kind and are intended to facilitate work at the terminal and to bring more security and transparency to all processes. This is why the feedback from AGORA Intermodal Terminals encourages us to deploy the Kingpin Monitor. He added: “The field tests are almost complete. Therefore, we are confident that we will be able to start the deployment in November, as planned. “

The handling of semi-trailer containers on wagons requires great diligence. Adverse conditions, such as high winds or other extreme weather conditions, or an improperly positioned kingpin, can compromise load safety if not carefully checked. Nexxiot’s Kingpin Monitor solution uses technology to address these challenges. The Kingpin sensor detects whether the kingpin is engaged and whether the hitch status is open or locked. This provides real-time information on the condition of the semi-trailer to on-site employees as well as dispatchers and decision-makers who have access to the data via the Nexxiot Logistics Cloud.

About AGORA Intermodal Terminals:

The AGORA Intermodal Terminal Working Group was established in 2011 as a result of an EU project. The approach of the working group is to bring together terminal operators to promote the exchange of information and ideas and common learning regarding “best practices” in terminal management, increasing terminal capacities and improved interaction with freight terminal operators, rail carriers and other freight terminal stakeholders. The current 18 member companies operate more than 40 freight terminals with a total capacity of approximately 5 million load units. AGORA terminals reached a handling volume of approximately 3.8 million load units in the ‘Corona year’ 2020 and expect further traffic increase in 2021.
