The Sepak Takraw Filipino Expat Association (Festa) in Qatar has recognized the winners of its Friendship Cup 2021 tournament, which saw the participation of teams from different expat communities in Doha.
The Philippines A team won the championship, defeating Malaysia A (first runner-up), Philippines B (second runner-up) and Malaysia B (third runner-up). The other teams that took part in the event – hosted at the Pearling Season International School in Mansoura – were Japan and Thailand.
“I hope this renewed interest in our passion despite the Covid-19 pandemic will foster unity and promote sport among citizens and residents as Qatar is set to host the Asian Games in 2030. “said Festa Qatar President Janno Rhey Soriano.
Founded in 2014, Festa Qatar promotes Sepak Takraw (kick volleyball) in Qatar and regularly organizes various initiatives aimed at helping returning players and students, including those in need.
Founder of Malaysia’s Sepak Takraw community in Qatar, Ariff, said it was a privilege to take part in the tournament, saying they love playing a sport from Southeast Asia to the Middle East.
Japan team captain Yo Osugi said: “In the first place, I had no idea that we had a Sepak Takraw (tournament) sport here in Qatar. The last time I played was when I was in Osaka with my teammates.
Sueksa, a Thai woman working in a spa in Qatar, added: “We practiced our traditional sport in Qatar, it was amazing and a unique opportunity.”
