International Olympic Day is celebrated on June 23 to encourage more people to participate in the Olympic Games and to raise awareness of the number of sports organized during this event. The Olympics are a premier international sporting event where thousands of athletes from around the world participate in a variety of competitions. The Olympic Games today are inspired by the ancient Olympic Games that were held in Olympia, Greece, between the 8th century BC.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was founded in 1894 by Baron Pierre de Coubertin and the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896.
