India’s smart personal audio market grew 62% in the third quarter (Q3) this year with 16.6 million units shipped, bringing its global market share to 14%, according to a new report.

The TWS (true wireless stereo) segment was the main driver in India, growing 92% to 7.3 million units, said global market research firm Canalys.

“India has taken another step forward as the country consolidated its position as TWS ‘third largest market with a 10 percent market share,” said research analyst Ashweej Aithal.

“This strong performance is due to local brands, such as boAt, Noise and Boult, as well as smartphone players, such as Realme, which are rapidly increasing their shipments of TWS,” added Aithal.

Overall, the global intelligent personal audio market declined 1.2% to 118.8 million units.

Western European and North American markets fell 21% and 15%, respectively, mainly due to lower shipments from Apple as consumers waited for the next generation of AirPods.

Globally, the TWS category barely increased, growing only 1.3% to 72.2 million units.

That was not enough to offset the decline in wireless headsets and earphones, which fell by 4.7% and 4.9% respectively.

Apple has maintained its position as the world leader in TWS, shipping 17.8 million units, but its shipments are nearly a third down from a year ago, due to a significant drop in demand. while consumers waited for third-generation devices.

Samsung, backed by a solid performance since the debut of the Galaxy Buds2, and the latest additions to JBL’s entry-level TWS lineup, regained second place, according to the report.

Xiaomi, which has yet to expand its affordable Redmi lineup after focusing on higher-value devices, dropped to third place.

Local Indian leader boAt made its first entry into the top five, shipping 2.8 million units. Edifier was just behind with 2.7 million units.

“We anticipate that the next quarter will be the turning point where the TWS category overtakes wireless headphones in number of shipments to India and other markets. The challenge is to ensure a robust supply, given the bottlenecks. of the supply chain and the willingness to manufacture locally, ”Aithal said. . (IANS / JB)
