ISTAF suggests introducing Sepak Takraw into esports
Sports games are easy candidates for esports, but there are currently none for sepak takraw. But this is precisely what the Sepak Takraw International Federation (ISTAF) wants.
Bernama reports that ISTAF General Secretary Abdul Halim Kader said the idea to introduce traditional sports arose due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He will also discuss the idea with the International Esports Federation (IESF) and the Global Esports Federation (GEF).
On the one hand, the idea is not bad. But on the other hand, for something to be an esport, there first has to be a video game. And as far as we know, there is none for sepak takraw. At least not the one with multiplayer support. The only one we know of is a mobile game called Roll Spike Sepak Takraw. It is produced by a Malaysian development team called Mediasoft Entertainment.
So, for ISTAF’s wish to come true, there would first have to be a game for it. But it remains to be seen if any of the usual suspects among sports game publishers will pick it up. There is also the question of the popularity of sepak takraw as a sport, which would be the main draw for publishers to create a game about it to begin with.
