KUCHING (November 20): Sarawak will attempt to participate in all Sukma 2022 events in Kuala Lumpur.

According to Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) General Manager Dr Ong Kong Swee, 16 grassroots sports will be played in Sukma next year.

“We don’t know if 31 sports (including 15 optional events) will be contested in the next Sukma, but sepak takraw is one of the base sports that will be included,” Ong told reporters after the launch of Kenyalang Sepaktakraw League (KSL) at Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Center on Thursday.

“The total number of events cannot be confirmed until Cabinet is in parliament to determine the budget for Sukma 2022 and the Ministry of Youth and Sports,” he said.

“Players in sepak takraw state are currently undergoing physical training at home due to the pandemic and they are closely monitored by their coaches,” he added.

Ong said SSC learned that Thai women’s team coach Sura Matwangsaeng died in his homeland. The SCC also announced that it had found a replacement, also Thai.

“Due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation, the new Thai coach cannot come to Sarawak now. Our local coach is doing the training at the moment and we are also getting a coach from Sabah, ”Ong added.

Meanwhile, SSC Sports Development Division Director Ahmad Rodzli Hashim said Sarawak will look to retain the women’s doubles gold they won at Sukma 2018 in Perak.

“We are strong in the women’s event so we are focusing on that so that we can maintain our performance in the previous Sukma in Perak,” he said.

Currently, 13 men and five women participate in the state’s elite sepak takraw training program.

Also present was the vice-president of Persatuan Sepaktakraw Sarawak (PSS), Dato Ismail Abang Saufi.
