BANGKOK: Sepak takraw men’s national team lost the inter-regu semi-final of the 35th Thai King’s Cup Sepaktakraw World Championship 2022 to the local team 0-2 at Fashion Island Sports World here today.

In the first set, the national team of Zulkifli Abd Razak, Muhammad Afifuddin Mohd Razali and Amirul Zazwan Amir, who were leading 1-9 at one point, managed to fight back and close the gap 16-17.

However, Thailand looked to their class to conclude the first set 21-18 before coming out stronger in the second set to beat the national team 21-10.

National coach Mohd Rashidi Nordin said his side suffered a major setback in the final after losing to South Korea in the group stage.

“Even though the national team fought hard, the host team continued to dominate and easily go home to enter the final,” he told Bernama.

Earlier, the national team suffered a shock loss to South Korea, ending the competition in Group B as runners-up and had to face Thailand as Group A champions.

Thailand will face South Korea in the final to determine the champions tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the national team will start the challenge in the men’s team regular event on Thursday against Indonesia, followed by Brunei (Friday) and South Korea on Saturday.

Mohd Rashidi said the team had a good chance in the group stage to advance to the knockout stages.

“We have an advantage in the men’s regular team. We have to put in place a strategy to record victory,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mohd Rashidi said during the team regular event that Malaysia, who will meet the Nepalese team tomorrow, have a chance to qualify for the semi-finals.Bernama
