MLB is last American professional sports league to upset Republicans after NFL and NBA
Following Major League Baseball’s decision to withdraw the All-Star Game from Atlanta due to Georgia’s new voting law, Republicans are now in MLB.
MLB’s net favor score among Republicans was 47% in mid-March, the highest score among America’s Big Four sports leagues. It has since collapsed to 12%, knocking the league below the NFL (15%) and NHL (26%), according to new data from Morning Consult. (The NBA has a favorability rating, which is calculated as the difference between the share of respondents with a positive opinion of the league and the share with a negative opinion, of -5 among Republicans.)
In general, Republicans are increasingly dissatisfied with professional sports in the United States due to the players kneeling during the national anthem, messages about social justice issues, and the relatively recent adoption of the Black Lives Matter movement. “As a result, Republicans now have a less favorable opinion than Democrats in the four big American sports leagues,” according to Alex Silverman of Morning Consult.
As well as costing league viewers, MLB’s decision to withdraw the game from Atlanta may lead to problems with Tory lawmakers. Earlier this week, Senators Ted Cruz, Mike Lee and Josh Hawley proposed to end MLB’s 99-year antitrust exemption. “It’s a league that wants to exert political influence, and at the same time, wants to get handouts and government grants,” Hawley told reporters. “They just can’t have it both ways.”
During a recent appearance on Andrew Klavan’s show On The Daily Wire, Brett Favre (who was open to voting for Donald Trump in the 2020 election) spoke about how many Republicans apparently feel about watching sports these days.
“I know when I turn on a game I want to watch a game. I want to see the players play and the teams win, lose, come from behind, ”said Favre. “I want to watch all the important parts of the game, not what happens outside of the game, and I think the general public feels the same. I can’t tell you how many people have said to me, “I’m not looking anymore; it’s not about the game anymore. ‘ And I tend to agree.
For Favre and all the other Republicans in America who tire of watching the big four sports for political reasons, The daily show senior correspondent Ronny Chieng has a suggestion: look at sepak takraw instead.
