Perth Mint watch double dragon, koi in ultra high relief
Chinese legends come together on a 2021 2oz .9999 $ 2 fine silver coin from Tuvalu.
The Double Dragons and Koi Fish Yin Yang piece has an aged finish and is in ultra high relief. Rich in Chinese cultural references, the coin’s highly symmetrical design depicts two golden koi carp arranged in the configuration of a yin yang (or taijitu) symbol and surrounded by two serpentine-shaped Chinese dragons in a drawing by the artist from Perth Mint Natasha Muhl.
No legend appears on the reverse of the piedfort piece (double thickness), to accentuate the drama of the Double Dragon design.
The two detailed Imperial dragons in the room float among the clouds. The mythical creatures surround a pair of koi fish, which appear in an enamel-like golden orange color.
The transformation of koi fish into dragons is symbolized by the interconnection of their colorful whiskers. The background represents floating clouds, associated with deities, and lotus flowers, symbols of purity.
The obverse shows Queen Elizabeth II, crowned in profile to the right.
This portrait, wearing a tiara and pearl earrings, was executed by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley.
The QUEEN ELIZABETH II caption, date and name also appear. Legend 2 OZ 9999 SILVER describes weight and purity.
According to ancient Chinese mythology, a school of golden koi carp moved up a fast-flowing river, full of boulders and other obstacles, to reach a legendary mountain waterfall known as the Dragon Gate. The waterfall towered over the river and defeated almost every koi attempt to climb its elevation. Despite the seemingly impassable height, a koi carp’s repeated efforts to reach the top ultimately proved fruitful. In recognition of his determination and perseverance, the gods made him the most auspicious creature in Chinese culture: the dragon.
In traditional Chinese culture, the dragon is revered as a divine creature and a powerful symbol of power, strength, wealth, and good fortune.
Koi carp are traditionally associated with happiness and harmony and are often used as a symbol of good luck for a happy marriage. In feng shui, the yin yang symbol represents the balance between positive and negative energies within “chi”, which in Chinese tradition is described as the life force of all living things on Earth.
