State-level Sepak Takraw tournament kicks off in Kurnool
The state-level sepak takraw (kick volleyball) tournament kicked off at the city’s sports authority outdoor stadium on Saturday. The tournament would see 130 athletes from across the state, 10 per district, in action.
The AP CM-2020 Cup was launched with the responsible district and the Minister of Water Resources, P. Anil Kumar Yadav, hoisting the national flag. Labor Minister Gummanuru Jayaram raised the sports flag.
Mr. Anil Kumar praised the students for choosing sepak to take control of other sports and added that athletes have to work hard to represent the state at national and international events.
Mr. Jayaram expressed his joy for hosting the tournament in Kurnool. Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy was promoting sport in the state, he said.
More events planned
Sports authority MD Bhaskar said about 2,000 athletes had been employed by the government. “We also give out cash prizes to athletes who win gold and silver medals at the national level. Each year, one state-level tournament is held per district. We plan to increase the number of tournaments per district to two, ”he added.
District Receiver G. Veerapandian said district officials are working hard to ensure Kurnool District excels in the sport. He then invited the athletes to visit the various historic sites in the neighborhood.
Among those present were MPs Hafeez Khan, Katasani Rambhupal Reddy, joint collectors Ravi Pattansetti and Syed Khaja Mohiuddin, City Commissioner Ravindrababu and Setkur CEO Nagaraju Naidu.
