The Ministry of National Defense at the head of the National Sepak Takraw C’ship

The Department of National Defense (DND) team dominated the competition to win the 2020 Sepak Takraw National Championship.

The MND team surpassed and dethroned the Home Office (MOI), which won the same tournament last year.

The MND team became the overall champion after beating the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces Center (ARC) team in the men’s 3v3 event on the final day of competition.

The Sepak Takraw 2020 National Championship took place from January 8 to 9 at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh.

The national championship, which is held every year, is part of the promotion and development of sepak takraw in the Kingdom. It also serves as a place of selection of players for the national team.

The MND men’s team won the first set, 21-12. The ARC team did better in the second set, but still lost 21-13.

Ahead of the men’s 3v3 title match, the MND team has already clinched two second places in the 2v2women and 2v2men categories.

The ARC Center team placed second overall, with a title to show in the women’s 2v2 event and a second place in the men’s 3v3 event. ARC also won third place in the men’s 2v2 category.

Third place goes to ME. The MOI team took first place in the men’s 2v2 division. Last year, the MOI team took two first places.

Due to the current health situation, the Cambodian Sepak Takraw and Chinlone Federation (CSTCF) has limited the number of participants this year.

Fewer than 10 teams, including several private clubs, participated in the 2020 Sepak Takraw National Championship. The schedule has also been shifted due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Last year, more than 100 players from 10 clubs took part in the tournament.

In his message on the occasion, Meas Sarin, President of CSTCF, thanked the ministries, clubs and other organizations that helped them organize the two-day event.

Measures added by congratulating winning teams and athletes. “They won through hard work, discipline and perseverance,” he said.

The CSTCF is making additional efforts to promote and develop the sport, Cambodia being among the emerging powers of sepak takraw in South East Asia.

The Cambodian men’s team sepak takraw won a gold medal at the 2017 Southeast Asian Games in Malaysia and placed second at the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines. Cambodia is aiming for a better finish in sepak takraw at the SEA Games 2023.
