Tok Mat Resigns As President of Malaysian Association Sepak Takraw | Sports
KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 – Datuk Seri Ahmad Ismail has announced his resignation as president of the Malaysian Sepak Takraw Association (PSM), effective at midnight last night.
Ahmad, better known as Tok Mat, who has led PSM since December 27, 2002, said the decision was made out of a sense of responsibility in the conflict that has plagued the sport’s governing body in recent times.
“The leaders come and go but the PSM must be defended, it is my hope”, he declared in the PM Bersama AM program, produced by Astro Arena last night.
He also took the opportunity to thank all members of the association for their cooperation with the programs and tournaments organized by PSM over the years, including the Sepak Takraw League.
On May 20, the Sepak Takraw Asian Federation (ASTAF) withdrew PSM as an affiliate member with immediate effect, after being found guilty, following Ahmad’s actions in sending a letter to the Olympic Council of Asia ( OCA) and which was copied to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in his capacity as Vice-President of ASTAF on February 24.
Ahmad was convicted of violating written pledges made to the International Sepak Takraw Federation (ISTAF) and ASTAF on March 14, 2008 “to support ISTAF and ASTAF to establish and maintain effective administration of the federation. “
He was subsequently banned from participating in any sepak takraw activity for 15 years, effective May 6, for several offenses related to the same letter.
So far, eleven members have decided to withdraw from the national governing body, namely the Sepak Takraw Association of the Federal Territory of Putrajaya (PESTAP); Gabungan Sepak Takraw Kelantan (Gastak); Johor Sepak Takraw Association (PSJ); Selangor Sepak Takraw Association (PSS); Kedah Sepak Takraw Association (PESTAK) and Sepaktakraw Association of Terengganu State (PSNT).
Perak Darul Ridzuan Sepak Takraw Association (PERSEDAR), Sarawak Sepak Takraw Association (PSS), Negeri Sembilan Sepak Takraw Association (PESTANS), Perlis Sepak Takraw Association (PSTPs) and Sabah Sepaktakraw Association (ASTAKA ) have also taken this step. Bernama
